Which Medical Do You Need?

OEUK and AMSA medicals follow different standards. Read both pathways below, then get in touch so we can confirm the right one for your role.

Offshore energy

OEUK or OGUK Offshore Medical

An OEUK medical may be required if you work, or are preparing to work, in offshore energy. OEUK medicals are also commonly referred to as OGUK medicals.

This pathway may apply to workers involved in:

  • Offshore oil and gas
  • Offshore wind
  • Platform operations
  • Offshore construction and maintenance
  • Marine support for offshore projects
  • Offshore decommissioning work

Your employer or contracting organisation should confirm the medical standard and any additional testing required for your role.

Maritime & seafaring

AMSA Seafarer Medical

An AMSA medical may be required if you work at sea or are applying for, renewing or maintaining a relevant maritime qualification.

This pathway may apply to:

  • Seafarers
  • Commercial vessel crew
  • Fishing vessel crew
  • Coastal and near coastal workers
  • Maritime workers
  • Crew working on vessels supporting offshore operations

AMSA has different medical requirements depending on the qualification and type of work involved. Contact us before booking so the correct form and process can be confirmed.

OEUK / OGUK

OEUK and OGUK Offshore Medicals

An OEUK medical assesses a worker against the applicable medical fitness requirements for offshore work.

The assessment may include:

  • Review of your medical and occupational history
  • Physical examination
  • Blood pressure, height and weight
  • Vision and colour vision assessment
  • Hearing assessment
  • Cardiovascular and respiratory assessment
  • Urinalysis
  • Additional testing required by your employer or role

The exact assessment will depend on the relevant medical standard, your health history and any employer instructions.

Please provide your employer paperwork when arranging the appointment. This helps the practice confirm whether additional testing is required.

An offshore medical certificate can only be issued when the examining doctor determines that the applicable medical requirements have been met.

AMSA

AMSA Seafarer and Maritime Medicals

AMSA medical requirements vary according to the maritime certificate or qualification involved.

Some seafarers require an AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness using Form 303. Near coastal workers may require a different medical form, such as Form 1850.

The correct medical will depend on your role, vessel and qualification.

Some AMSA Form 303 appointments may need to be arranged through Sonic HealthPlus before the local examination is completed at Sale Medical Centre. Call the practice before booking so the current pathway can be confirmed.

A medical certificate is issued only when the relevant assessment has been completed and the required medical standard has been met.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Are OEUK and OGUK medicals the same?

OEUK is the current name used for the organisation previously known as OGUK. Workers and employers may still use either term when referring to an offshore medical.

Is an OEUK medical the same as an AMSA medical?

No. OEUK medicals relate to offshore work requirements. AMSA medicals relate to Australian maritime and seafarer requirements. One medical should not be assumed to replace the other.

Can I book an offshore medical in Sale?

Which AMSA form do I need?

The form depends on the maritime qualification and type of work involved. Contact the practice with your AMSA or employer paperwork before booking.

Can I book an AMSA medical directly with Sale Medical Centre?

The booking process depends on the type of AMSA medical required. Some Form 303 appointments may need to be arranged through Sonic HealthPlus first. Call the practice to confirm the correct pathway.

Can my employer arrange appointments for several workers?
